Ruins of Pompeii and Panoramic View of Naples

Upon arrival of your cruise ship, the guide will be waiting at the port with a SHORE2SHORE© sign.

We will begin our panoramic bus tour around the city of Naples: passing along the Riviera di Chiaia seafront promenade, admiring the Gulf of Naples and the Castell'ovo (Egg Castle) where, according to Neapolitan legend, Virgil hid a magic egg. We will visit the Royal Villa and the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station, the oldest in the world and the birthplace of the first scientific experiments.

We will arrive at Posillipo, where we will take a panoramic tour of the Gulf, Mount Vesuvius and the islands. Our tour will continue towards the city centre. We will pass by the Maschio Angioino (Castel Nuovo), a medieval castle that has become a symbol of the city of Naples. We will admire the exterior of the Palazzo San Giacomo, the current residence of the Mayor, and finally the Piazza del Municipio.

Buried under ash for about 2,000 years, we will arrive at Pompeii, an ancient and rich Roman city, a magnificent and historic example of life in 79 AD.
Precisely in that year, on 24 August, the ground shook and Vesuvius unleashed all its fury on the area after 1,800 years of inactivity. The city of Pompeii was completely submerged under the lava and ashes of the Vesuvius volcano. However, excavations that began in the 17th century brought to light archaeological remains of immeasurable value.

The guide will take us on a guided tour of the magnificent ruins of Pompeii, starting at Porta Marina, the gateway to the economic and political centre of the city. We will be taken on a walking tour, evoking the history and experience of a typical day in ancient times.

Throughout our journey, we will encounter houses, temples and villas with mosaic floors and frescoes on the walls. We will be able to admire the luxurious mansions and fabulous art of the wealthy aristocrats who came to Pompeii to escape the frequent crises in Rome. The houses were designed around an internal garden with few windows to the outside. We will visit one of the more modest houses, and also explore the ancient thermal baths or bathing rooms, temples, theatres and markets.

New archaeological discoveries are currently being released, with frescoes from the period, or scientific DNA evidence about the lifestyles of its population.

Every corner of Pompeii has its own history, with much to see, making you feel as if you are travelling back in time.

At the end of the excursion in Pompeii, we will return to the port of Naples by coach for our farewell.

• This excursion is not recommended for people with reduced mobility, who have difficulty walking, who travel in wheelchairs or with pushchairs due to the unevenness of the ground/terrain.

• The Ruins of Pompeii are closed on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December.
